What will Sports be like in the Metaverse? We explain it to you

We all look forward to learning more about the metaverse and what’s going to happen in the future. We know that we will have a lot of opportunities and that the ability to socialize with other people within the metaverse will have no limit. But, will it be possible to practice sports within the Metaverse? How will this sport be emulated? In this post, we are going to explain what is known about this and we are going to tell you about our experience playing Ping Pong (table tennis) in the Metaverse.

If you prefer to see our experience playing Ping Pong in the Metaverse in a more graphic way, we have uploaded the following video to our YouTube channel where we show it to you:

Sport in the metaverse

One of the first concerns that arose for people after the appearance of the Metaverse and its imminent future was the sedentary lifestyle that it was going to cause in the population, but the reality is that healthy practices are already being worked on so that this does not happen.

Sport within the metaverse is already a reality, in fact, there are already people who are already exercising within it. One of the best-known platforms is Zwift, where the first 2020 Cycling Esports World Championship was held. In 2022 it is planned to play again on the same platform.

Companies like OliveX are already working on fitness gamification and augmented reality. It is a metaverse that aims to merge the real world with the virtual world. More and more companies are betting on AI (Artificial Intelligence) to be able to incorporate their own services into the metaverse.

In fact, there are already some companies that are based on artificial intelligence to offer personalized training in a 100% virtual way and even if we want to get nostalgic, one of the first precedents of this model was carried out thanks to Wii Fit or Kinect Training, powered by Nintendo and Xbox respectively.

Oculus is continually developing new sports apps to play with your Oculus Quest 2 . Games such as skiing, rowing, cycling, archery, golf, and Ping Pong itself, which is the example we have used to record the video.

Sports companies that are already investigating the Metaverse

One of the most important clubs in the world is already taking its first steps into the metaverse. Said club is Manchester City, which has made an alliance with Sony to build the first stadium by a professional club within the metaverse.

The virtual version of Etihad Stadium will be an exact replica of the football stadium located in Manchester. The main idea is to recreate the club perfectly so that fans of the team can attend the games without leaving their room.

This means opening the doors to new business models and job opportunities for those who manage to understand the technology. In fact, the advertising sector will be one of the great beneficiaries of all this.

The Etihad Stadium of the metaverse will have no capacity limit and will allow users to view the matches from different angles or interact with them in different ways. The ideas are still under development, but the experts are exploring all the possibilities and opportunities that they can give users to live exciting virtual experiences.

Our experience playing Ping Pong in the Metaverse

Finally, we are going to explain our experience playing Ping Pong within the metaverse.

The video game that we have tested is called Eleven Table Tennis, a game that is available for the Oculus Quest 2 device and is completely free. This game has both an individual mode to practice against the computer and a multiplayer mode where you can play with players from anywhere in the world and talk to them while you play.

The truth is that we have been very pleasantly surprised by the sensations when playing it, since it feels as if you were playing in real life. When you pick up the controller of the Oculus Quest 2, you have the feeling that you are holding a Ping Pong paddle instead of a controller, the simulation of the movement and hitting of the ball is very realistic. You have to control exactly the force with which you hit the ball because if you pass the ball it will go very far from the field.

Without a doubt, realism and immersion within the metaverse is being achieved, and although it is something that will take a few more years, we are seeing more and more successful applications that achieve a much more realistic experience.

To conclude, we want to emphasize that playing sports in the metaverse will surely be great and we will reach a point where we hardly even need to leave the house to do physical activity, but to maintain a full and healthy life we must interact with other people abroad.
