eBay launches its first collection of NFTs in tribute to hockey player Wayne Gretzky

The famous e-commerce platform eBay has just launched its first collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in collaboration with OneOf. This first series features Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky, considered by many to be the greatest player of all time. According to eBay, other similar collections are to come.

eBay officially enters the world of NFTs

After its CEO announced that cryptocurrencies would most likely be accepted as a means of payment on its site, eBay has just formalized the launch of its first collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

This first series, dubbed ” Genesis “, depicts hockey player Wayne Gretzky, a prodigy from his milieu who holds the majority of National Hockey League (NHL) records. Throughout his 20-year career, the Canadian player has marked the history of ice sport with 2,857 points scored including 894 goals.

Nicknamed “The Great One”, many consider him the greatest hockey player. Thus, this collection of NFTs represents Gretzky in an animated way, in poses inspired by the front pages of Sports Illustrated magazine.

The collection will be offered through the following 4 levels of rarity: green at 299 pieces, gold at 199, platinum at 99, and diamond at only 15. At the time of writing these lines, the diamond, platinum, and gold collections three have been sold, with a respective value of 1,500, 100, and 25 dollars.

While eBay had announced in the second quarter of 2021 to its 140 million users that its platform now includes the sale of NFTs, no technical solution for selling directly through the blockchain has been found.

For the Genesis Collection, buyers are emailed a link through which they can retrieve their NFT from an external wallet.

NFTs created in partnership with OneOf

This collection of NFTs was developed in collaboration with OneOf, an eco-friendly platform dedicated to NFTs from the world of sport and music, allowing fans to get closer to their favorite athletes.

An idea supported by Wayne Gretzky himself:

“Forty years ago I was grateful to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated, it was a monumental moment in my life. I am honored to offer this collectible experience to my hockey fans who have followed my career for decades. »

Therefore, this collaboration makes it possible to mix the very large eBay community, present in more than 190 countries around the world, with OneOf’s ecological Web 3.0 technology, thus promising quality NFTs through a platform with a global aura. All focused on the user experience, as Lin Dai, CEO of OneOf, said:

“We’re thrilled to partner with eBay, the world’s largest and most trusted e-commerce platform, to introduce NFTs and the power of blockchain to the community of eBay enthusiasts through an experience dynamic and friendly. »

Unlike its usually minted (minted) drops on the French blockchain Tezos (XTZ), oneof this time preferred to develop them on the Polygon (MATIC) sidechain, declaring at the same time that “ the future is multichain ”.

According to eBay, the launch of the Genesis collection officially marks its first step in the sale of NFTs, and other sports-related series are expected to be released soon.
